Filters

There are three types of filters in Reach that you should be familiar with:

  1. Campaign filters are what we set up when we launch each campaign. These limit the total set of voters available to any user on the campaign. These are stable and fixed. In most cases, you will want your campaign filters to include every active voter in your district or state. Think of these like the same way you can filter the voter file for committees in VAN. Campaign filters can be based on any voter file data like geography, district, status, etc. They cannot be based on application-level data like survey responses or tags.
  2. Search filters. These are something we have to set up and configure upon request. Once we have added them to your campaign, your users will be able to apply these filters to their search in Reach. This means they will only see search results of voters who match their selected filters. Their filter selection is persistent so it will remain in place until they change it. Like campaign filters, search filters can be based on any voter file data, including precinct, party, county, etc. They cannot be based on application-level data like survey responses or tags.
  3. The Quick Filter bar. On many list-view screens in Reach, there is a filter bar at the top which lets users filter the list they are looking at. Some filters appear as buttons right in the bar. Other filters may be available if a user taps “Filters & Prefs” and drills down thorough the menu for more options. The things which can be quick filters depend on the screen, but on the Network screen, this includes tags (whether they’re smart tags or manual tags) and relationship types. So, if a user adds a bunch of voters to their Network, they can then use the Quick Filter Bar to narrow down their Network to people who have certain tags. Keep in mind that some tags (“manual tags”) are applied explicitly to voters either by users or in bulk via API, and other tags (“smart tags”) automatically show on a given voter if they match the criteria of the tag. It is also possible for you to pre-set filters on screens like My Network when a user gets to that screen via an internal link action card, a Network Contact Acton Card, or a Push Notification.
